Do You Want a BRD? Yes, No, Maybe

Abstract
Growing up as a Business Analysis Professional my worth was based on how well I wrote a Business Requirements Document. The less lines in the version control section meant I was a rock star. Hours were spent eliciting, documenting, and communicating requirements. If anyone brought up anything related to the solution they were banned from meetings. This was the beginning of a delivery process that called for getting all requirements before we began delivering a solution. For several reasons, business stakeholders felt better sharing everything they need for a project before any solution was started.

As Agile gained momentum, a major shift took hold that swung the pendulum to a side where very little was known up front. BRDs went out the window and a lot of projects started with a few bullet points highlighting the goals of the project to diving into detailed user stories. These extremes are not the answer. Somewhere in the middle is where teams need to land.

In this session, Kupe will share how to bring the best of a BRD to help the team stay focused on the need. He will share a concept, #norequirements, that help the business stakeholders feel they will get what they need and allow the delivery team the freedom to design a solution that meets the need in the time frame desired.  At the end of the session Kupe will send you a note asking, “Do you want a BRD?” All you have to do is circle, Yes, No, Or Maybe.  

Speaker Biography
Kupe Kupersmith is an Agile, Business Analysis and Project Management enthusiast by day, and Improv, Comedy, and red M&M fanatic by night (amongst other things)! Throughout his career, Kupe has been focused on helping teams improve delivery through better collaboration, communication, teamwork, and techniques to ensure a shared understanding of the need.
